East London Museum

Description

The East London Museum is located in East London in the Eastern Cape. Established in 1921, the museum is considered to be one of the most fascinating natural and cultural history museums in South Africa. There are numerous exhibits on display at the museum, but the one that is most well-known is the specimen of the coelacanth, a fish that was thought to be extinct over 80 million years ago, that was caught off the Chalumna River mouth in 1938. Other exhibits include an extensive beadwork collection relating to the Xhosa speaking people, an excavation of a large fossil reptile skull and skeleton, informative display of maritime history of the area, and a whole lot more.
