Description

The 18th century Koopmans-De Wet House on Strand Street is one of its finest examples of the traditional Cape-Dutch architectural style, depicting both the elegance and opulence of the early Dutch-colonial rule in South Africa. Today, the home is maintained as a monument and decorated with fine artworks, including expensive porcelain, exquisite German and Dutch glassware, original tapestries and antique furniture made from stinkwood and yellowwood.

The Koopmans-De Wet House is so-named because it was once home to the famous socialite, Maria Koopmans-De Wet (1838-1906). It was here that Maria was placed under house arrest for voicing her protest against the Aglo-Boer war and its hostile concentration camps.
