Muizenberg Beach
Description
Muizenberg Beach is one of the most well-known beaches along the False Bay coastline. As you enter the area, you can’t miss the colourful beach hunts dotted along the sand. Muizenberg holds a high appeal due to its warm water and family-friendly atmosphere. Recently awarded Blue Flag Beach status, Muizenberg Beach is one of the most popular Cape Town beaches and offers excellent facilities. The adjacent Muizenberg Pavilion offers water slides, kiosks, a swimming pool, and putt-putt course.
The waters are much warmer than along the Atlantic Seaboard and swimming here is actually quite pleasant. The waves are not too powerful, making the water fantastic for swimming, body boarding, and surfing. There is not a day that goes by that the water isn’t lined with bobbing surfers, but you never feel overcrowded as there are breaks all the way down the beach. Life guards are on duty during the Blue Flag season (December – March) and shark spotters positioned high up on the mountain keep an eye out for sharks in the water below.
The corner of the beach next to the Victorian railway station is known as “Surfer’s Corner†and is lined with cafés, restaurants, and ice cream shops. A number of local surf shops hire out equipment and offer lessons. A lovely 30 minute boardwalk leads along the coast to St James Beach, and offers a spectacular vantage point for watching whales and other marine life in the winter months. Dogs are allowed on leashes between April and November.
