Oliver Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg serves as the primary airport for both domestic and international travel to and from South Africa, and is reputed as being the busiest airport in Africa. It is situated in Kempton Park, Gauteng, and is named after Oliver Tambo, a former president of the ANC. OR Tambo International Airport was formerly known as Johannesburg International Airport and before that, Jan Smuts International Airport.

OR Tambo is one of the few airports in the world that has direct flights to all 6 inhabited continents on earth. The airport boasts 6 terminals that can be broken down into 3 major areas: the international terminals, the domestic terminals, and the transit terminal which has since been demolished to form an interlinking central terminal in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Or Tambo International Airport has been held in high esteem for having hosted several important attractions. It was used as a test airport for the Concorde during the 1970s to determine how the aircraft would perform during take-off and landing at high altitude. In 2006, the airport became the first in Africa to host the Airbus A380, which landed in Johannesburg on a test flight on its way to Sydney, via the South Pole. It was also used to serve as grounds for the South African Airways Museum; a room full of memorabilia started by two fans of the airline as a temporary location until they could move it to one of Jan Smuts’ International buildings in 1987. The museum has since relocated to Rand Airport.
