De Oude Bank Bakkerij
Description
De Oude Bank Bakkerij (literally the old bank bakery) is a celebrated bakery and coffee shop in the old bank building on Church Street in the historic town of Stellenbosch. Owned by Frits Schoon, the Oude Bakkerij offers a rustic, warm and noisy interior that is always full of chatter, laughter, soft jazz music, and the smell of freshly baked bread. The bakery specialises in fresh and organic homemade bread. Visitors can look forward to steaming bricks of ciabatta, sourdough, dark rye, breadsticks, baguettes, and more. The idea is to grab some bread, and cover it in a range of toppings and condiments, including ham, buffalo mozzarella, various cheeses, salami, biltong, mustard glaze, olive tapenade, shitake mushroom pesto, and more.
In addition to the bread, there is also an array of pastries and baked good available, as well as artisanal ice cream, fresh meat, homemade jams and preserves, cheeses, coffee, boutique wines and craft beers on sale. The small market is worth exploring with organic veggies and coffee beans available to take home with you.
Raw wooden tables and benches provide cosy eating nooks inside. On warm days, the overflow of the coffee show spills out onto the sidewalk where tables and chairs are waiting in the sunshine. There is a simple menu offering fruit and yoghurt, bread with scrambled eggs and bacon, hot sandwiches, and various platters of bread, cheese, and preserves. Pizza and live music nights are held every Wednesday and Saturday evenings!
