Pietermaritzburg City Hall
Description
The Pietermaritzburg City Hall, with its 47m high tower, was built from 1893-1900. Even today, this building holds the global record as the largest brick building in existence, but, perhaps more important, is that this impressive red-brick building is equally beautiful. The building is now considered a monument, and is well worth a visit for any tourist in the region of Pietermaritzburg.
The interior of the city hall boasts beautiful stained glass displays and an enormous pipe organ, which is the largest south of the equator. Various exhibitions and concerts are held at the City Hall, including frequent visits by the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. Just outside of the Pietermaritzburg City Hall stands a 5.5kg naval gun known as the One O’clock Gun, for the obvious reason that it used to fire a shot every day at exactly one o’clock, with the exception of Sundays.
