Description

Pietermaritzburg in Kwazulu Natal is home to the Tatham Art Gallery, one of the major SA art museums of contemporary times. The Tatham art gallery was first officially opened to the public in 1903 when Mrs Ada Susan Tatham donated a collection of works to the gallery. The collection grew more significant when Lieutenant Colonel R H Whitwell further added to the kitty by giving a significant donation in 1923.

Today, the gallery exhibits works from artists including Pablo Picasso, Edgar Degas and Henri Matisse, alongside many great South African painters and artists. Many of the most noteworthy British and French art works on display here date back to the 18th century.

The Tatham Art Gallery forms part of the Msunduzi Municipality, and serves the region of Msunduzi through visual arts. The gallery building and Pietermaritzburg City Hall are two major attractions to the city of Pietermaritzburg, and the gallery building itself is also noteworthy, as it is the old Supreme Courthouse.

The Tatham Shop

The Tatham Shop is known for its wide variety of hand- made craft items, primarily from makers in KwaZulu- Natal. These include traditional and contemporary ceramics, jewellery, carved, beaded and embroidered objects and many more.

If you have interesting objects to show us, please phone or email to make an appointment.

Sunday lunch is buffet style and is available from 12h00. Bookings are preferred.
