Platteklip Gorge
Description
A hike up Table Mountain offers some of Cape Town's best views and scenery. The Platteklip Gorge to Upper Cable Station hike is the most popular, and covers a 3km ascent which can be done in between 1 - 3 hours, depending on fitness and pace.
The hike is fairly tough, and should be approached with adequate caution. While suitable for older children in peak physical condition, the path should be followed at an easy pace, allowing time to appreciate the views of fynbos and the gorge below. Keep an eye out for dassies (rock hyrax)!
Hikers are advised to never hike alone, but instead in a group of at least four. One should also ensure that there is enough water and warm clothing, as the weather is known to change very rapidly.
At the upper cable station, there is a restaurant, café, and curio shop to reward you for your efforts. A telescope offers wonderful views of the city and Atlantic Seaboard. The route starts at the parking lot, just 2km past the lower cable station. The route is clearly signposted.
