St John's Diocesan School For Girls
Description
St John's Diocesan School for Girls (St John’s DSG) is an Anglican private day and boarding school for girls in Pietermaritzburg. The school teaches Grade RR to Grade 12 and has 500 students.
HERITAGE
St John's Diocesan School for Girls was founded in 1897 by Sisters of St John the Divine. Sister fanny, along with Novices Anna and Margaret, were sent to look after orphaned children in Pietermaritzburg. After a few months, they were running the St Cross Orphanage in Loop Street and named their community “The Society of St John the Divine”.
A boarding facility was built to accommodate the growing influx of children who went to school in town. As the convent grew, the building next door was acquired for older girls and named St John’s School in 1897. In 1898, the building became a school for girls with classes from preschool to Matric.
The original school building, opened in 1915, is now a part of the Junior School and the original school hall is now the Junior Resource Centre.
