Stellenbosch Slave Houses

Herte Street, Stellenbosch, Western Cape
+3

Description

The rows of houses along Herte Street in Stellenbosch were originally servant’s quarters and their plain exterior can easily be missed. However, if you're interested in learning some fascinating history, these slaves houses are well worth a visit when exploring Stellies and the Cape winelands. With original thatched roofs, they paint an accurate picture of how life must have been for slaves in 1834. They were built by the missionaries of the church for the former students and over the next 100 years they lived there in harmony with their neighbours. The forced removal of these people occurred in 1950 when the Group Area Act came into play and the cottages were sold to new white owners.
