The Three Rondavels

R532 road near Graskop, Mpumalanga

Description

The Three Rondavels is a natural rock formation on the edge of the Blyde River Canyon along the Panorama Route in Mpumalanga. Shaped like three rondavels (African huts), the rocks are said to portray how traditional huts have evolved over the years with the most basic on the left hand side leading towards the more modern beehive hut on the far right.

These three fascinating geological formations were formed when the soft underlying stone eroded to leave slate and quartzite in the shape of three large huts. The viewing point stands 1,380m above sea level overlooks the greenest canyon in the world. A lovely craft market is available in the parking lot.
