Johannesburg Central Police Station
Description
Johannesburg Central Police Station, formerly known as the infamous John Vorster Square until 1997, was once the nerve centre of the apartheid repression. This ordinary blue and white building, situated in downtown Johannesburg in the Gauteng province, was once the home of the dreaded Security Branch, where many people were held and tortured, and afterwards died while in custody.
Previously named after J.B Vorster, the fourth prime minister of the Republic of South Africa, it has since been renamed and still functions as a police station, serving the Johannesburg region.
