Art Route 67
Description
The Art Route 67 is a fantastic heritage walk in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. The route consists of 67 public artworks that symbolise Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of service to the country. The well-marked route begins at the Campanile and leads up 67 steps to the second largest flag in Africa.
The Art Route 67 is one of the most exciting proudly South African inner city developments, combining visual arts, urban design, and heritage themes. Points of interest on the route include a large metal cut out of Nelson Mandela leading a line of voters on April 27th, sheltered booths in the shape of sails, a giant set of pipes that turn the famous gusts of the Windy City into melodies, and the mosaic at the base of the pyramid. A short stroll around will lead you past themes of the Eastern Cape, from the indigenous people and settlers, to modern day sport celebrities and Karoo scenes. Some of the artworks are still a work in progress.
