Gandhi Square

Between Rissik Street and Fox Street, Johannesburg, Gauteng
+2

Description

Gandhi Square was originally built in 1983 as Government Square in the Johannesburg CBD. In the years since, the square has undergone many transformations, but was finally thoroughly refurbished in 2002 and a life-sized statue of Gandhi was unveiled. It was given a new name, after the prominent Indian politician Mahatma Gandhi, who came to Johannesburg in 1903 and worked as a lawyer and civil rights activist. This square is home to numerous shops, restaurants, and cafes.
