I’m not a fan of clowns. Not one bit. I don’t have a good reason, just a bad vibe…and it’s tainted my view of the circus. But Cirque du Soleil is a whole other kind of circus that has made its way to one of the top spots on my Bucket List. So when I found out that they were coming to Cape Town and Johannesburg in March 2013, I almost leaped out of my chair. Actually it was more like a klutz spin-slide and I whacked my knee on my desk, but I guess that’s an appropriate reaction for a show of this magnitude coming to your home soil.

If you are one of the very few people who don’t know who or what Cirque du Soleil is, it’s basically an extremely beautiful and spellbinding modern version of the circus. Have a quick peek at this clip and you’ll understand what I’m talking about:

The last time Cirque du Soleil toured South Africa was in 2011, when audiences were awestruck by Saltimbanco. In 2013 they will be bringing Dralion, a performance that has wowed over 2.5 million people worldwide since its debut in 1999. Dralion (pronounced “Dra-lee-on”) draws its inspiration from Eastern philosophy and its eternal quest for harmony between humans and nature. The name is derived from the two emblematic creatures: the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West. Audiences will be mesmerised by the fusion of Cirque du Soleil’s multidisciplinary approach with the 3000 year old tradition of Chinese acrobatics.

The show will be held at the Grand West Casino in Cape Town from 5 – 10 March 2013, and at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg from 21 – 24 March 2013. Tickets are available through Big Concerts and Computicket. And if you’re looking for a place to stay in Cape Town or Johannesburg, remember that it’s easy with LekkeSlaap!

I cannot wait to see this show and it’s definitely going on my Christmas wish list! Have you seen Cirque du Soleil live? Tell us about it!
