If you’re feeling a little guilty about your privileged lifestyle, then you should look into ways of helping out the needy. Whether you prefer hands-on work, or simply the role of a guardian angel, there is something available for you that will qualm all those guilt pangs.
Walk man’s best friend
TEARS is a non-profit organisation in Kommetjie that aims to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome abandoned cats and dogs. Donate your time and take part in their dog-walking programme. After a few hours with your new furry friend, you are guaranteed to have made a difference. If your experience has really moved you, you can donate a sum of your choice to the organisation who appreciates every cent they receive. Email tears@tears.org.co.za or visit their website for more information.
Plant a tree with GreenPop
Greenpop is a social business that aims to promote green and sustainable living. They run fun awareness campaigns such as plant days at schools, jam sessions in Long Street, bicycle rides in Cape Town, and tree planting projects in Zambia. If you’d like to volunteer your time to plant trees, you can sign up for free on their website.
Knit-a-row-and-go
Me-a-Mama, a maternity wear company, has launched a charity drive to knit 1000 blankets for orphaned babies. They have placed wool, needles and instructions in cafes, hairdressers, and waiting rooms across Cape Town to get the crowd involved in a feel-good charity. While enjoying a cup of coffee or getting your hair done, you can knit as much as you like, and then leave the wool in the tub for the next person, and so it goes on. If you’d like to get involved, contact 071 872 7104 or email carey@meamama.co.za.
Change an animal’s life
If you love animals and would grab any opportunity to make a difference to their lives, why not consider volunteering at the SPCA? Whether it’s helping out in the kennels, cattery, or Horse Care Unit, assisting with fundraisers, gardening, or maintenance of the grounds, there are plenty of ways you can get involved. You will simply have to attend a volunteer orientation session (which happens monthly), which will give you a well-rounded idea of the programme before you sign up. If the hands-on approach isn’t for you, donations are welcome. For more info, contact 021 700 4140 or email enquiries@spca-ct.co.za.
