At some point in every parent’s life, they’d like nothing more than to ship their darling child off to boarding school or the army, and take a well-deserved luxurious break. No nappy changing, no finding ways to stop your little one from asking “but why”, and no teenage tantrums. Just think, with the children safely out the way, you could enjoy a week of pure bliss, indulging in all the recreational activities that have taken a back-seat in your life over the last few years!

However, those who can’t bear to spend too much time away from their kids should know there are ways to bring your children with on your family vacation, without having to compromise on all the luxurious extras you’ve been dreaming about.

Time away from the Children

  1. Child-care facilities

This may seem obvious to some, but many parents have no idea that certain accommodations offer babysitting services upon request, (and yes, it will be at an additional fee). Some recommended places include 5 Lime Street (Johannesburg),  Earthbound B&B (Western Cape), Bluewater Beachfront Guest House (Port Elizabeth), Stille Woning Boutique Hotel (Mpumalanga), and Ibis Lodge (Durban).

Once you’ve come to an agreement with the sitter, you can spend your day golfing, getting a massage, hiking, having a picnic, touring the city, or whatever else takes your fancy. Then in the evenings, your little bundle of joy will be returned to you, tuckered out from a full day of play.

  1. Restaurants with Play areas

If your child is old enough to be left on their own in a play area, make sure every place you go out to eat has one. You don’t have to settle for fast-food chains like McDonald’s, but places such as Blue Route Mall in Cape Town offer child-care facilities right next door to the food court; or Clearwater mall in Johannesburg that has a child-friendly Piazza with jungle gyms, as well as the Fantasea gaming arcade. This way you can enjoy a glass of wine or beer with your food, along with a civil conversation with your partner that’s not interrupted by tears or food throwing. If your children are both in their pre-teens, it’s likely safe to enjoy a family meal together.

Activities with the children

  1. Teach them your hobby

If you’re dreaming of surfing, but you can’t leave your little ones unattended, find a beach in the area with a surf school. This way, for future family holidays your little one can join you at the breakers and you’ll build some great memories with them. You can do this with any activity you enjoy, such as golf (maybe start the under tens off with putt-putt), horse-riding (‘cos who doesn’t love horses when they’re little), or even visiting a game reserve (rangers can teach them about conservation and animal tracking). You and your partner can then enjoy some alone time, while still having family time mixed in.

  1. Relax together

If all you want is a restful vacation, consider having a family picnic at a beautiful spot, taking a gentle hike to a viewing area, or driving around the town and visiting museums and places of cultural interest together. You can keep your little ones entertained, and get to enjoy some of the natural beauty and culture you’re craving.
